‘Raven’ - Saga in Nine Fragments

Christina Rossetti’s poem ‘A Bird’s Eye View’. A tragic tale of the shipwreck of a Viking Princess as she sails overseas to her wedding. Music to a cinematic saga (a la Noggin the Nog?). Each of the nine binary form fragments being first a high long shot from the bird’s eye view and then a zoom in on the Prince, the doomed Princess and her wedding party retinue.

‘Pierrot Alone’ - Three Songs

John Drinkwater (1882-1937), actor-manager and poet of gently fantastical imagery, was associated with the ‘Georgian’ group of English poets. His world still lingers in deepest Surrey - home of half-hidden suburban tennis clubs, wooden village halls and amateur operatics.

‘Pierrot’ is a dark story of clumsy lust and betrayed innocence - a fall from Eden.

‘Green Apples’ describes night time in a roomy old house - perhaps there is a ring around the moon?

‘The Vagabond’ is a Romantic Wanderer - but this one, unaffected by Sehnsucht and Sturm und Drang, is free from care and free as air.

‘Goblin Fruit’ - Chamber opera/ballet in four scenes.

Christina Rossetti (1830-1894), poet and sister of Dante Gabriel, achieved lasting fame with her poetry, especially with ‘Goblin Market’ (here with her original title of ‘Goblin Fruit’), a wonderful fantasy piece, which must reflect in part her experiences as a volunteer in a charity for prostitutes at Highgate. The narrative arc of the tale of Laura's downfall as she succumbs to Goblin fruit, her rescue by good sister Laura, the powerful images of Goblins and erotic fantasy are all a gift for the composer and it has been set many times.
