Norman MacCaig (1910 - 1996) was a Scottish poet and schoolteacher - ‘arguably the greatest Scottish lyric poet of the twentieth century’. He wrote over 600 poems, many of them re-published as a collection in ‘Collected Poems – A New Edition’ (Chatto and Windus paperback 1993). This collection, rich in marvellous imagery, inspired Joe St.Johanser to compose many song settings. Ten of them are brought together here, followed by an extended aria arrangement from his opera 'Spem' with libretto taken from Shakespeare's 'Venus and Adonis'.
